In Memory of Irene Longstreet (1908-2005)
Ms. Irene was one of the first people we met at the nursing home when our golden, Lady, became a therapy dog. She was always so excited to see Lady, and wanted to hear all about her. She loved the idea that Lady went to work with me every day. Her mind was as sharp as a tack, even though after 97 years, her body was giving out. For 3 years, we looked forward to our visits with her as much as she did to see us. In the beginning she always had dog biscuits for Lady, but when she found out that Lady liked the green beans on her dinner tray, it became a ritual: Lady would jump up in bed next to her and she would give Lady treats off her tray. Her door was covered with pictures of Lady: on the boat, dressed for trick-or-treating, her Christmas picture, even a picture of her in her raincoat. She loved dogs of all kinds, but she made us think Lady was her favorite. Our trips to the nursing home are a little lonelier now that she is gone, but I am sure she now spends her days at the Rainbow Bridge playing with all the dogs.
